Nature props to use for dog tricks

Task 2 of the International Trick Dog Competition is about tricks with nature-made props:

Here are some ideas for the kinds of props you can use for the tricks:

Just a word of caution before doing any tricks with any props please make sure first that the prop/object is safe for your dog.


Wood / Plant-Based Items:

  1. Tree or trees

  2. Bush/shrub

  3. Stick (no sharp ends!)

  4. Log

  5. Log slices (they are brilliant for props but also for distance work, marks, small raised platforms, stepping placements etc.)

  6. Tree stump

  7. Fallen branch

  8. Bark piece

  9. Pine cone

  10. Acorn

  11. Leaf (or pile of leaves)

  12. Bundle of twigs

  13. Wooden plank

  14. Wooden spoon

  15. Tree slice (cut round)

  16. Bamboo stick

  17. Wooden cane or pole (not sharp ends!)

  18. Reed or cane

  19. Wooden bowl

  20. Wooden crate

  21. Driftwood piece

  22. Fallen palm frond

  23. Wooden chair/stool

  24. Hollow log


Grass / Plant / Crop Items:

  1. Bundle of dried grass

  2. Hay bale

  3. Straw bundle

  4. Tall grass clump

  5. Corn stalk, corn head

  6. Wheat sheaf

  7. Sunflower stem, sunflower flower

  8. Potted plant (non-toxic)

  9. Hedge section

  10. Bush or shrub

  11. Nuts (make sure they are safe)

  12. Fruits (make sure they are safe- apples, pears, berries)

  13. Veggies (make sure they are safe- pumpkins, carrots, root vegetables)


Stone / Earth / Mineral Items:

  1. Pebble

  2. Small rock

  3. Large boulder

  4. Flat stone (for balancing or paws-up)

  5. Gravel patch

  6. Pile of stones

  7. Brick (clay)

  8. Clay pot

  9. Terracotta saucer

  10. Sand mound, sand on the beach

  11. Dirt mound

  12. Path stepping stone

  13. Garden edging stone

  14. Smooth river rock

  15. Beach stone

  16. Chalk rock

  17. Limestone piece

  18. Slate tile

  19. Clay lump (air-dried)


Water / Sea-Themed Natural Items:

  1. Shell (empty, make sure it is safe)

  2. Seaweed (dried or fresh)

  3. Driftwood stick

  4. Smooth beach sand (make sure no sharp sand if digging)

  5. Rock pool (controlled trick area)

  6. Pebble circle (marker for tricks)

  7. Tide-smoothed log

  8. Sea sponge (dried)


Natural Objects from Trees or Forest:

  1. Fallen apple

  2. Branch

  3. Logs

  4. Fir cone

  5. Birch bark roll

  6. Mushroom (only fake please avoid real mushrooms for any tricks)

  7. Chestnut

  8. Walnut (in shell)

  9. Seed pod

  10. Maple seed (helicopter type)

  11. Moss patch (for soft tricks or target work)



Garden / Nature-Adjacent Objects

  1. Flower pot (clay or wood)

  2. Watering can (metal or bamboo)

  3. Wooden fence post

  4. Garden spade (wooden handle)

  5. Tree root

  6. Compost heap or wood chip area (safe section)

  7. Rock border

  8. Garden arch (wood)

  9. Pile of autumn leaves

  10. Garden bench (wood or stone)


Natural Household / Handmade Objects

  1. Wooden box

  2. Wooden rolling pin

  3. Basket (wicker)

  4. Woven mat (jute, seagrass)

  5. Wooden spoon

  6. Coconut shell

  7. Wooden chopping board

  8. Wicker tray

  9. Cork (natural cork bark)

  10. Wooden peg

  11. Wooden pole or poles

  12. Wooden parkour obstacles

  13. Wooden table

  14. Wooden chairs

  15. Wooden crate that can be also used as a platform (check for splinter risk!)

  16. Wooden bench

  17. Wooden placement mats

  18. Gardening tools with wooden handle

  19. Toys with wooden elements

  20. Wooden paint brushes and easel

  21. Wooden bowls

  22. Wool rug or blanket

  23. Broom (witches type or household)

  24. Brush with wooden handle or natural bristles

  25. Natural/compostable bags, washing up sponges)

  26. Wooden musical instruments


Light Natural Materials:

  1. Feather

  2. Bundle of straw

  3. Wool ball (undyed, natural)

  4. Jute rope

  5. Hemp rope

  6. Natural fibre ring (for tug)

  7. Wooden ring

  8. Coconut fibre brush

  9. Dried flower bunch


This is not an exclusive list. Once you start noticing - you'll spot the nature objects and opportunities for tricks everywhere.


And of course you can use all of the seasonal decorations and displays for the tricks too: Halloween, Harvest festivals, Thanksgiving etc.
